Wood statuettes, 'Vishnu and Sri' (pair)

Masterfully carving jackfruit wood, Komang Kariasa depicts two of Bali's most beloved deities – Sri and Vishnu, known in Indonesia as Wisnu.

Komang Kariasa

"My name is Komang Kariasa. I am a Balinese man, born on June 12, 1979.

"Being encouraged by my father, who is a master of antique wood carving, I started making antique style statuettes when I graduated from high school in 1998. My inspiration comes mostly from figures in traditional Balinese stories or legends, and shadow puppet characters.

"As the only son in the family, with three sisters, I must carry on the skill and facility inherited from my parents. All of my sisters have married and moved out of the house to live with their husbands. In Bali, the youngest son does not usually leave home even after marriage. Instead, he takes care of his parents and continues the family's responsibilities in the village."
