Wood statuette, 'Dragon Attacks Prince'

Watununung succumbs in extraordinary battle against a ferocious snake-like dragon, the bell in its mouth averting its identity as a god. The ill-fated Watununung is recreated with exquisite detail, as Nyoman Subrata records the legendary battle in this crocodile wood statuette. Subrata's carving excellence is manifest in the adversary's fierce-looking eyes, Watununung's attire, and each minimal dragon scale. A work of sublime finesse for a welcoming interior.

According to legend, there was once was a king who had to wives Dewi Shinta and Dewi Landep. One day the king decided to go into the forest to meditate and the two queens went to look for him however Dewi Landep was with child and ended up giving birth in the forest, near a big flat boulder a mysterious voice had told them to go to. The queens named the child Watugunung, which means "mountain stone." One day Watugunung was unruly and kept nagging Dewi Landep for more rice until she became furious and hit him in the head with a siyut (a big wooden spoon used for stirring rice while boiling). Watugunung ran away, never to return. Years went by and he became quite powerful and conquered many kingdoms, including one governed by two widowed queens. Watugunung decided to marry them although unbeknownst to him they were Dewi Shinta and Dewi Landep. However Dewi Landep noticed the scar on his head and realized he was her son, so they cancelled the marriage and encouraged him to pursue another woman. Unfortunately this other woman was really Lord Wisnu's wife and Watugunung tried to attack him, but the ever powerful deity transformed himself into a dragon named Kurma and eventually defeated Watugunung.

"What I wish now is to continue upholding the values of those who taught and inspired me, while being able to continue taking very good care of my family and my woodcarving group."

"My brother belonged to a group of master carvers in Bali who worked side-by-side for decades. Now, 28 years later, this woodcarving group still exists and I am its elected leader.

"In the beginning, my older brother, Wayan Sukamara, taught me the various techniques of sanding and finishing. In 1974 I began to sculpt, taking inspiration from some of the finest statues and carvings of our region. The traditional forms and poses were of strong beauty and fine workmanship, which inspired me to learn this style.

"My favorite statue themes are the Singa, Chili, Garuda, Sri Pudhak, Legong, and Barong. Rama and Sita are my favorite subjects for masks; these are traditional characters in religious mythology and offer a variety of ways for an artist to express creativity and style. For the past four or five years my work has been featured in exhibits in Bali.

"The influence of my younger years has continued to guide my work. What I wish now is to continue upholding the values of those who taught and inspired me, while being able to continue taking very good care of my family and my woodcarving group.

"In 1977 I married Nyoman Jati. We now have four girls and one boy; three of them have finished school. We live in the same village where I was born.

"I have a funny story, one you might not understand if you did not grow up in Bali: It happened once when I brought some of my carvings to Denpasar, our biggest town. I visited the shopping center there, and saw an escalator for the very first time. I really wanted to try it, but, not understanding how it worked, I tripped and fell. Everybody laughed at me. They thought it was very funny, but I was terribly embarrassed!"
