'Salya and Satyawati,' statuettes (pair)

Nyoman Sedatayana works with exquisite elegance to invoke the presence of Satyawati and Salya, eternal lovers from the Mahabharata epic poem. Their images are hand-crafted from crocodile wood and painted with oil hues to accent the elegance and ethereal spirit of this revered couple. Makes for an original gift to mark a meaningful anniversary.

Considered to be the longest poem in the world, the Mahabharata covers sub-stories, legends and myths. The themes revolve around social, ethical and religious traditions and amongst them is the story of Satyawati and Salya. She was originally named Dewi Pujawati and she personifies the perfect wife: beautiful, polite, honest, loyal and above all, truly dedicated to Salya, her husband. In return Salya adored her ever more and gave her a new name, Satyawati meaning loyal and beautiful woman. King Salya was commissioned to be chief warrior, and before accepting, Salya asked Satyawati's permission. As a ksatria (warrior), Salya and Satyawati knew he should fight bravely until his death if necessary, and in their hearts, that their days were numbered. She respectfully and solemnly replied, she would follow wherever he went. King Salya was killed, and Satyawati, after requesting permission from the Creator (God), ended her life by joining her beloved husband’s body in the funeral pyre. Their souls thus traveled together into heaven.

Nyoman Sedayatana

"My name is Nyoman Sedayatana. I was born in Bali on July 8, 1970. I come from a family of artists, such as traditional gamelan music players, dancers, and carvers. I never stop thinking about how lucky I am to have skill and be born in Bali. As we know, Bali is well known as a world of paradise and art, a place where I can practice arts without any difficulty.

"Supported by my relatives and friends, I created and sold my own artworks at the age of 14. From the beginning until now I've concentrated on making wooden carvings like statuettes and antique furniture. For my statuettes, unlike common wooden statuettes made by other artists, most of my products require two finishing processes. After carving the details, the first finishing process is to refine it, which won't change the color. The next step of finishing is to color the sculpture using oil paints."

"Once people see my artwork, they will notice the strong spirit of Balinese figures in each of the statuettes. Those figures I carve are Balinese dancers, gods and goddesses, Balinese men and women, and much more."
