"Hello, I am Tijuram and I come from a town in central India. I was born May 8, 1975 to a blacksmith family and studied until 8th standard [8th grade]. I could not study further because of financial problems.
"I remember as a child I used to watch my father and uncles working. They made all kinds of farming tools like spades, axes, knives, saws and shovels. They also made fancy
diyas (candleholders). Diyas were an integral part of a marriage. It was a custom for parents to give diyas of different shapes and sizes to their daughters as a wedding gift.
"So diyas also occupied a special place in our craft. I grew up watching my parents work and eventually I joined my family craft. By the time I joined, wrought iron had received international acclaim and we also introduced new and fanciful items for home décor like candleholders, masks, hangers and much more. All our products depict the lifestyle of villagers in this region, so it was never difficult to execute our designs. We do not pre-design our products – they just flow from our imagination. Our products are totally handmade and no machine is used at any time. We join two sheets or rods with nails instead of the welding techniques used by most artisans.
"We have exhibited our work in many towns and cities throughout India and they have been appreciated by one and all. It is a great pleasure to be introduced to Novica. I am sure Novica's genuine effort to promote artisans will definitely be a turning point in my career."
