Okyere Hammond

"I'm Okyere Hammond. I was born on September 15, in 1980 in eastern Ghana. Sometimes after school, I would go to my uncle's shop and help him carve. Again he sometimes would bring some of his works home for us to help. Through this, my interest in arts and especially carving was generated. However, through this minor assistance that I gave to my uncle, I became skilled in carving.

"I then decided to pursue the art full time. So I decided to settle with my uncle. My uncle had to put me through a one-month training period to polish me up for any further advances in carving until my work was perfect and so successful. It took me even less time than that to master the training.

"In a family of five children, all boys, it's my junior brother who, apart from myself, also carves drums and is very talented in other arts, one of which is painting. I can produce about 20 good quality works in a month. Mostly I like working in a quiet area where I can concentrate on whatever I'm doing.

"I am not married and have no children."
