Sodalite statuette, 'Blue Kingfisher'

A solitary bird, the kingfisher flaunts lavish blue feathers. Willy Macedo sculpts a faithful portrait of the bird in sodalite and onyx. Jasper forms the soft, bright breast and obsidian becomes the long, stout beak. Knows in Peru as a martin pescador (fishing martin), the bird perches on quartz with strong bronze feet.

Willy Macedo

Born September 26, 1974, Willy Macedo has specialized in stone-carving since 1995. Working with a renowned gemstone sculptor in the capital, he perfected his technique. "I am more of a technician than an artist," he says, this because he works in replicas. "Art is creating something from nothing." Yet he shows a highly refined skill in each realistic sculpture.

"I sculpt gemstones to find the ecstasy of life, happiness in and of itself" he confides. "I am supremely happy when I am able to create something." Sculpting is a form of communication, and through each piece he strives to transmit his own artistic language. He uses gemstones and minerals, bronze, glass and a special kind of glue.

"I dream of moving to the city and finding lots of time and space to be alone," he says. "At the moment my family lives with me. I want to find my way in life, because I am doing what I like and I enjoy it immensely. Through my work I manifest and celebrate my joy. Novica and the Internet are a new and interesting lifestyle for me."

Macedo has exhibited his work throughout Peru as well as in Brazil (1998, 2000 and 2003).
