Luzia Perez

"I was always interested the ceramic arts, and until the 1980s it was not a medium taught in the art schools of Brazil. Gradually, ceramic artists working in stoneware techniques came to be known and it was then that I began to learn, while my while sons were growing up.

"I set up my own studio where I taught and also developed different lines of work – utilitarian pottery and sculpture.

"It was with the orientation of professor João Wesley from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro that I developed my personal expression, focusing more and more on contemporary sculpture, a wide new field where I could apply my research on form and concept. I enjoy escaping from labels and the uniformity of artistic production.

"Over the years, I participated in the Rio de Janeiro ceramist association of which I served as president between 1988 and 1999, and since 1986 I have exhibited my work in galleries throughout the country."
