Brass statuette, 'Shiva's Highest Form'

A five-headed cobra spreads his hood to protect Shiva, celestial overlord of deliverance through destruction. Shiva is one of the most complex gods of India, embodying seemingly contradictory qualities. Brass statuette, 'Shiva's Highest Form'

A five-headed cobra spreads his hood to protect Shiva, celestial overlord of deliverance through destruction. Shiva is one of the most complex gods of India, embodying seemingly contradictory qualities. He is both the destroyer and the restorer, the ascetic and the symbol of sensuality, the benevolent herdsman of souls and the wrathful avenger. In this form, the deity is known as Panchaanana, the Five-Headed One, representing earth, water, fire, air and aakaasa (space). Panchaanana is a metaphysical concept representing the god's highest form. Brass is Rahul Jain's medium for this intricately-detailed sculpture.

Rahul Jain

"Hello, my name is Rahul Jain and I was born on June 3, 1970. I have inherited this profession of dealing with handicrafts from my family. We have been practicing this tradition for many years now. Initially I had absolutely no inclination toward this profession or anything to do with handicrafts. It was a complete turn around when I joined this profession.

"As any other child, I lived a very carefree life. I pursued my studies in science but when I turn 17 or 18 years old, I developed this sudden urge and interest toward Indian handicrafts. I was mesmerized by the beauty of Indian handicrafts and this is when I realized what I was missing. I started working with certain artisans like my family. I deal with almost all varieties falling under Indian handicrafts. Brass and bronze artifacts, embossed items, furniture, and vases to name few.

"I personally do not involve myself in making the products but I design all of them. It's been about 14 years now that I have been involved in this profession of dealing with handicrafts and so far my business has been smooth. I must mention that my major breakthrough came when I received a huge consignment from a reputed export house. That was in the year 1988. Of course, at times small problems do arise but that is trivial and natural and that never affects my work or state of mind.

"Today, I work with about 50 artisans. They have been always there for me. They understand my thoughts. Not all of them are financially well off and my desire is to help them in every way possible. I hope that in the near future I shall be able to fulfill mine as well as their dreams.

"I am glad to be introduced to Novica. I hope my relation with Novica will brighten the lives of all those who work with me."
